Many people have responded to my African travel news with "why there?" Its pretty simple really...here's why:
My classmates from architecture school, Eddie and Sam, won third place in a design competition in 2016. The three winning teams get to build their designs in a village called Abetenim in Ghana. The competition was supported and hosted by the Nka Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports the growth and sustainment of the arts and culture community in Abetenim. Eddie and Sam were responsible for putting a team together to make this project happen.
I saw this is a once in a lifetime opportunity- I couldn't pass it up. So here I am, four weeks until departure, excited to be part of the design and construction team! We will be designing and constructing a live/work building for craftsmen and artisans of the robust weaving industry. The project will serve as a studio and home base for traveling or apprenticing weavers in and around Abetenim.
